STEVIA 2010 : Scientific & Industrial Perspectives
Is there a place for Stevia to prevent the Metabolic Syndrome?
Paris, May 6 2010
Since its creation in 1998 at the Pasteur Institut in Paris, the French Society of Antioxidants played an important role on the applications of antioxidants in different areas and has reduced the distance between basic research and practical applications. The too “chemical” language of free radicals limited credibility of their use. The main role of SFA is to put forward strategies for the prevention of chronic diseases such as obesity, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases or aging of population.
Why a conference dedicated to Stevia in France? During annual conference held in June 2009, many members of the SFA asked to link prevention strategies and strategies of innovation "vanguard" and chose Stevia as an example. In 2009, France authorized the use of Stevia in Agro-Food Industry. This plant, native of South America, makes a lot of noise for its exoticism but also for its sweetness associated with high levels of antioxidants. The SFA has decided to bring together various experts to issue an opinion on impact of Stevia’s consumption on health.
The objectives of Stevia in 2010 are:
- To discuss recent advances and scientific researches on Stevia
- To discuss the biological and pharmacological effects unrelated to the sweetness of Stevia, and particularly of the metabolic syndrome
- To discuss the outlook for possible applications in the agri-food and food supplements
- To address the regulatory aspects in France and Europe
- To present some marketing aspect and the impact on consumers
- To promote exchange between academia and industry: academic experts, doctors, industrialists, will be present to achieve the practical applications of Stevia
The SFA will invite all those involved in research and development, extraction, purification, formulation and marketing of nutrition Stevia to briefly present their knowledge in this field. A Roundtable will bring together academic and industry stakeholders on the following issues:
- Is there a place for Stevia in the prevention of chronic diseases?
- Will Stevia replace all sugar and artificial sweeteners?
- What are the prospects for formulation of industrial products with Stevia?
- What is assurance there to purity and quality?
- What are the prospects for the pharmaceutical applications of Stevia
